Crack Repair

Cracks can occur on the top, sides or back of your guitar. They are usually caused by lack of humidity – especially sudden humidity drops. Wood is an organic material that swells and shrinks as it takes on or gives off water from the air. Here in Tucson, top cracks are a “regular” problem. They usually occur in the lower bout and oftentimes run from the bridge toward the end of the instrument.

Cracks can be readily stabilized and repaired if you get them repaired soon after they open up. If you wait the repair will be more difficult.

Most players consider top cracks a “badge of honor.” They decline to repair the finish and are content that the crack is stabilized. Correctly repaired, you will never notice a change in tone.

Cracks are repaired using either yellow luthier’s glue or CA glue, depending upon the circumstances. Both will seal the crack and stabilize the top, back or side, but neither is invisible. CA glue darkens unsealed spruce and will leave a dark brown “scar.” Yellow glue is not as noticeable, but it is not invisible. Most cracks require the installation of one or more small wooden “cleats” inside the instrument to strengthen the repair and prevent it from re-opening. I match the wood type when preparing the cleats and install them “cross-grain” to strengthen the joint.
